If you would like a taste of Norwegian Christmas traditions, come along to the Christmas Market at Skjerven Farm! Dear
all expats and families,

Expat Relocation wishes to
invite you all to an Expat Cultural and Social Saturday in Oslo on October
22nd.

In Norway flea markets are generally arranged as fund-raisers
every spring and fall by the marching bands at the various elementary schools.
Going to flea markets is a popular activity among the Oslo population. Even the
Crown Princess Mette-Marit can regularly be seen at her local school’s flea
market. There is always a possibility of finding hidden gems among the items for
sale, or one can participate in the daily auction for the finer items. This is
also an opportunity to experience perhaps the only place where Norwegians will
haggle for prices, and to see the hard-core flea market enthusiasts run towards
their targets at the opening of the market.
We will go together to the flea
market at Huseby Skole, known to be one of the biggest and best in town, and
easy accessible both by metro and car. We will meet at the nearby metro stop
right before the market opens, and go in together.

Dear
all expats and families,

We are happy to invite you all to visit the
Oscarsborg Fortress by the town of Drøbak Saturday September 24th. Oscarsborg
is a fortress island idyllically situated in the narrowest part of the Oslo
fjord inlet. The island has
proud historical traditions, functioning as the main military installation guarding
the entrance to Oslo from the sea for near 5 centuries. The fortress proved
particularly vital during WWII, effectively halting the German attack fleet’s
advance up the Oslo fjord during the night of April 9th 1940.
Artillery from the Fortress and its torpedo battery sank what was then
considered the German Navy’s pride: the “Blücher”. This action allowed the
Norwegian royal family, the government and members of parliament enough time to
flee from the capital, and mobilize resistance towards the invaders.

Oscarsborg has primarily served as the
military academy for the branch known as the “Coastal Artillery”, a military
branch unique to Norway. Yet, today the branch is obsolete due to the new facets
of modern warfare, and was dismantled in 2001. Oscarsborg has since served as a
‘living museum’ open to the public, boasting a restaurant, hotel and conference
center. In addition to the fortress itself, the island is also famous for its
network of underground tunnels and bunkers, some still considered to be
“inhabited” by ghosts. The attraction is suitable for kids as well as adults.

Expat Relocation’s Jon E. Bergan, who served
at the fortress, will conduct the guided tour.

We will meet at Drøbak Torg (town square) at
11:30 Saturday 24th. Below you will find a map of Drøbak, and where
the pier to Oscarsborg is located. The easiest method of transportation from
Oslo is taking bus 541 from the Jernbane
Torget
(Fred Olsens gate) – see 2nd map. The designated stop is Drøbak torg, and Jon will meet you at
this location. The bus uses approximately an hour to get there. Should you
choose to travel by car, you may also finding parking at this location.

The event is free of charge
for members. For Non-members: Single: NOK 100,- / Family: NOK 250,-. This
includes fee for ferry, entrance and guiding. Please respond to bertil.rorstad@expatrelocation.no
within Friday the 23rd before 12:00 if you
would like to join us for this event. Also, please remember suitable clothing
as most of the tour will be outdoors.

Should
there be any questions or you need to make contact on the 24th, you
may reach Jon on the following number: (+47) 47 36 97 83

Dear all expats and families,
